Kenya is a developing East African country known for its wildlife and national parks.  The capital city is Nairobi.  The second largest city is Mombasa, located on the southeast coast.  Tourist facilities are widely available in Nairobi, the game parks, the reserves, and on the coast. 

A. Visa

East African and COMESA countries passport holders do no require entry Visa's into Kenya. However all other passport holders require a Visa that attracts a visa fee of $25 USD.  Visa's can be obtained at the Kenyan missions in the participants respective countries and in the absence of a Kenyan mission, Visa's are also issued at the point of entry. Where possible the host will attempt to facilitate the issuance of group visa's subject to confirmation from the relevant authorities. B. Vaccinations

Please check with your health authorities whether you need any vaccination to enter/exit Kenya. However, A Yellow Fever Certificate is required from those traveling from a yellow fever prone region.

 

C: Accommodation

Negotiated hotel rates have been arranged at the Jacaranda hotel, the Intercontinental Hotel, the Hilton Hotel, the 680 hotel, the Sarova Panafric hotel and the Lenana Conference Centre hotel. Please request for the "EAIGF 2009" rates when making your reservation. We encourage you to make reservations before the 31st of July 2009. We will also be organising Safaris for those interested (see contacts below under contact persons: "Travel, Tours and Safaris" & The Obama Safari). Please note that participants shall take care of their expenses/bills unless otherwise explicitly stated by the EAIGF secretariat. The event organisers will only take care of the cocktail, coffee and lunch during the meeting and the social event (dinner).

D. Personal Expenses

Telephone calls, laundry, fax, pay-per-view TV channels, consumed items in the mini bar, and all additional drinks, meals and room service, additional guests in your room, MUST be paid by the individual concerned before checking out. KICTANet will not cover these charges.

 

E. Airport Transfers

Taxi Services are available throughout Nairobi and you can use taxis to reach the hotel(s) and the venue. There is also public transport available in form of Buses which you can use as an alternative and cheaper mode of transport. The bus route number to the city centre is Number 34 from the airport The bus route number from the city centre to the venue is Number 23, and the closest bus stop is the Westland’s Bus Stop which is directly opposite to Jacaranda hotel. Note that taxis charge on average US$30 from the airport to the city centre/to the Jacaranda hotel (one-way). Taxis charge on average US$10 from the city centre to the Jacaranda hotel.


If using a taxi/cab, ask them to take you to the Jacaranda hotel in Westlands.

F. Dress Code

The general dress code for the event is smart casual. Presenters are however requested to dress in official attire when making their presentations. The dress code for the cocktail and the dinner is also smart casual.

 

G: Weather

Situated at a high altitude, Nairobi has a moderate climate. The current average temperature is 24C during the day and 17C at night. You can Check the 5-day weather forecast at  http://www.bbc.co.uk/wether/ or at http://weather.cnn.com.

 

H: Currency and Currency Exchange Information

The standard accepted currency in Kenya is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). There are plenty of places you can exchange your money for Kenyan Shillings. You will be able to find Forex Exchange Bureaus at the Intercontinental Hotel or in town.


The current exchange rate is about KES 82 to the US dollar. You can find more extact exchange rates at the Central Bank of Kenya website, http://www.centralbank.go.ke/rates/exchangeindex.asp. Please note that most ATM's accept major credit/debit cards: Visa, Master Card etc.

 

I. Electricity and Electrical Outlets

Kenya’s standard electrical output is 220-240 volts/50hz. You will require a transformer to use electrical appliances if you are coming from most regions in North America (designed to use 110volts).

 

Kenya uses the grounded WA-7 outlet plug and the #5/#6 ungrounded wall outlet plug.

Please bring your own adapters.

 

J. Internet Connection

The Telecommunications Service Providers Association of Kenya (TESPOK) will provide wireless internet connectivity at the venue. The hotel provides internet connectivity at the business centre, please inquire at the hotel’s reception during check in for rates, charges and requirements.

 

K: Meals

Breakfast is included in the hotel room fees.

 

Coffee breaks and lunch during the meeting period will be catered. The cocktail and the social event (dinner) will also be catered for.

 

Please inform us by 31st July 2009 if you have any special dietary and health requirements and we will inform the hotel. Do bring your own medication for all your known needs.


L:Security
The City of Nairobi is amongst the cleanest and safest in the region. Increased security police patrols (uniformed and plainclothes), CCTV cameras in some streets and general political stability are ingredients that promote a sense of security within the country. The Central Business district is very well lighted at night providing good visibility. During the day, it’s active and busy with human and automobile traffic. It is however advised not to carry or expose valuable items. At night, its encouraged to use taxicabs to commute from one point to another.

M:Registration
Registration will be start at 08:00am on 7th September 2009 at the entrance to the meeting venue (Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Tsavo Room). Conference materials and the meetings programme will be provided during registration.
